Slavko Vincic to Officiate High-Stakes Istanbul Derby Amid Turkish Football Controversies

Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic has been designated to officiate the highly anticipated Istanbul derby between Turkish title contenders Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

The 45-year-old has been selected by the Turkish Football Federation for Monday’s crucial showdown following a request from both clubs, as reported by ESPN.

Vincic, who oversaw last season’s Champions League final, has been called in amid ongoing controversies in Turkish football over the past year and a half.

Earlier this month, Adana Demirspor abandoned their match against Galatasaray in protest of a penalty decision. Additionally, in December 2023, the league was temporarily halted after MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca physically assaulted a referee following a last-minute equalizer.

Currently, Fenerbahce trails league leaders Galatasaray by six points ahead of Monday’s 17:00 GMT kickoff.

Fenerbahce head coach Jose Mourinho has welcomed the appointment, having previously described the football atmosphere in Turkey as “toxic.”

“I believe it’s important for the match’s credibility and reputation,” Mourinho stated. “If it’s a top referee—and he is a top European referee—I’m pleased because, like everyone, I want to win, but I also value fair play.”
