The Alaska authorities search for missing small plane

The US Coast Guard for the Alaska region stated that a Cessna Caravan plane was 12 miles (19km) offshore on a journey from Unalakleet to Nome when “its location was lost.”

The two communities are approximately 146 miles apart across the Norton Sound, an inlet of the Bering Sea on Alaska’s western shoreline.

Rescue and recovery teams “are working to reach the last known coordinates” of the flight, state officials mentioned in a statement.

They said they had been alerted to an “overdue” plane operated by the airline Bering Air at 16:00 local time on Thursday (01:00 GMT).

The 10 individuals on board included nine travelers and a captain, the update from the Alaska Department of Public Safety stated. There was no data immediately available about who was aboard.

The BBC has reached out to Bering Air for a response.

The volunteer fire squad in the destination city Nome said the captain had informed air traffic controllers that “he planned to enter a waiting pattern while the runway was being cleared.”
